How to use Imagery and Imagination for Self-Improvement
Many of the new developments in expanded consciousness
have realized the importance of imagery and the use of
creative visualization. This return of interest, however, is fairly
new and is scattered throughout different psychologies. But
they all utilize creative visualization in the same way. The
obvious realization is that people have learned not to use their
imaginations and consequently this facility has diminished.
Imagery, however, is a natural feature of the nervous system
and it can soon be re-learnt.
This book is concerned with a discussion of imagery and in
particular creative visualization. In Part I we deal with some
conceptual issues. Because imagery has largely been ignored
in standard courses on psychology we begin by discussing this
and how it is the basis of imagination. Even in this chapter we
supply ideas on how to improve imagery and imagination. In
Chapter 2 we discuss dreams. The reason for this is to show
that dreams utilize creative visualization quite naturally and
we can learn from these when consciously creating images. A
person's behaviour is very much dominated by their self-
image: in Chapter 3 we discuss some speculative views about
'Self' and how this knowledge can aid in calling on 'inner
guides'. This chapter tries to draw on Eastern ideas and apply
them in a way that appeals to the West. In the final chapter in
Part I we draw together many of the principles and propositions
