THE NORTON UTILITIES
Do not install the Norton Utilities on your hard disk if it
currently has erased files you intend to UnErase, or if you
plan to UnFormat your disk.. You might overwrite the
erased files with the Norton Utilities themselves. If
you have erased files to recover on your hard disk, run the
Utilities from a floppy disk, recover the files, then proceed
with the installation.
This version of the Norton Utilities is supplied on two 3.5-
inch disks, and three 5.25-inch disks. The disks are
labelled Disk 1, Disk 2, and (for 5.25-inch only), Disk 3.
The Norton Utilities now include an installation program.
To install the Utilities on your hard disk, insert Disk 1 in
the A: drive and type:
a:install
The installation procedure will take you step-by-step
through the process of installing the Utilities on your
system. At each point in the process, you'll be instructed
what to do. At several points the installation procedure will
explain to you the reasons for certain actions.
The installation program will search your hard disk for
older versions of the utilities. If any are found, the
directory containing them will be offered as a default
location into which to install the new version of the
Utilities. You may specify another directory if you wish.
If you install the new Utilities into your old Utilities
directory, you will be asked what to do with the old
versions. You may choose to delete them, to save them to
a backup directory, or to quit the installation procedure
without taking action.
You will also be given the chance to substitute Safe Format
for the normal DOS FORMAT command. In the process,
DOS FORMAT is renamed to XXFORMAT. See the
section on Safe Format for more details on how it works
