Hard Times
'I want Facts, Sir,' said Mr Thomas Gradgrind. 'Only Facts will ever be of use to these children.
Coketown was full of Facts. Its buildings shook all day with the thunder of its great machines. But are the people happy with their Facts?'asks Dickens. Are Thomas Gradgrind's own children happy? If so, why does his daughter marry so unhappily? Why does his own son waste his life?
This is a novel set in the 1840s, a time when the factories were being built. But for the people, these were 'Hard Times'.
