Indonesia The Impossible Dream
The post-Second World War period witnessed the
emergence of several independent nations in Asia.
The United States of America emerged as a pre-
eminent nation in a world where Britain was fast
loosing its old-time glory. Several nations in Asia
during their struggle for independence were loo-
king upon America as the torchbearer of democ-
; and naturally America was expected to prove
its credentials.
Unfortunately, the American diplomacy during
this period completely belied the expectations of
the people in Asia. It was prejudiced in favour of
European Powers, and in the process, lost the
goodwill of a number of new-born nations.
An interesting case in point was that of Indo-
nesia. The leaders of Indonesian freedom struggle
like Achmad Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta sin-
cerely looked upon America as a friendly nation
but the Eisenhower administration not only initi-
ally supported the Dutch interest in Indonesia but
gradually led the latter to a position of enmity.
The people and the leaders of Indonesia, in time,
became a ware of the efforts of America to desta-
bilise the new-born nation through ClA activities.
The book presents a vivid picture of indepen-
dent Indonesia's nation-building efforts vis-a-vis
American diplomacy in the region during 1950s.
