The CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics has been published continuously since 1914. Dur- ing the years since the inception of this Handbook there have been only three Editors-in-Chief. The first was the late William R. Veazey, Professor of Chemistry at Case School of Applied Science. Later he was an outstanding scientist and officer of the Dow Chemical Company. Subsequent to 1914 and through 1951 the Handbook was edited by a physicist, the late Charles D. Hodgman. He, too, was a member of the faculty of Case School of Applied Science, which was later to be named Case Institute of Technology and still later, Case Western Reserve University. The present editor has served since 1951 and had the privilege to know each of his predecessors.
