the first letter of the English alphabet, was also the first letter of the Phoenician, Hebrew, and Greek alphabets. The Hebrews called it aleph and the Greeks changed it slightly, calling it alpha. The word "alphabet" itself comes from joining the Greek names for the first two letters-alpha (A) and beta (B). Thus the first two letters have come to stand for all the rest, just as "learning your ABC's" really means learning your DEFGHIJ's as well.
The shape of the letter A has changed slightly from time to time. The legs have been shorter or longer, the crossbar more crooked. But even the earliest traces of the letter look familiar to us. The Phoenician picture symbol for A was probably an ox's head with two long horns. It looked like
