Theory, Methods and Process of Counseling And Psychotherapy
The goal of this counseling text is to present a comprehensive overview of the field of counseling. Although the book is written for use as a major textbook in beginning counseling courses and should be particularly useful in methods classes, it should also be a valuable resource and reference for more advanced readers. It is designed to address a wide audience including counselors and counseling psychology majors preparing to work in a va-riety of settings.
Our intent is to present a broad view of the foundations, theories, and practices of counseling without emphasizing a particular theoretical orien-tation, thus giving the reader a well-balanced foundation for further study. It is also our objective to integrate fundamental counseling research with practical implications in a meaningful and useful way. Therefore, we exam-ine the major findings of those who have studied counseling theory, methods, and processes.
Part One introduces the reader to the field of counseling and to those personal qualities that enable counselors to be more effective. Part Two provides an overview of counseling theory, including a summary of the contributions from other disciplines, a description of seven major counsel-ing approaches, and a step-by-step description of how beginning coun-selors can develop their own theory. Part Three provides a comprehensive view of the counseling process, introducing the kinds of counselor re-sponses and communication skills that will facilitate the counseling process in individual or group therapy, with specific populations and also client concerns. Part Four illustrates the use of counseling theory, methods, and processes and provides an analysis of some professional issues for coun-selors
